My apartment building has this strange quality of having a new smell on every floor every day. Walking up the stairs is sometimes like eating Willa Wonka’s chewing gum. Maybe the first floor will smell like some kind of tomato soup, then there’s a nice roast beef flavour on the second, and finally blueberry pie on the third. Well actually the third floor, my floor, tends to be more neutral. And it never permeates into my actual apartment — it’s only in the halls. My apartment has its own unique assortment of odours for me to worry about.

Today when I was coming back home, there was incense burning on the floor in a corner of the hallway. I thought for a second that this explains the strange new smell every day, but I don’t think incense comes in all the scents of food I’ve experienced. This is the first time I’ve seen it. I think maybe the little old lady on the first floor was doing a little something something she wanted to cover up.
