You can begin typing text onto the page immediately, but you will quickly realize that it looks pretty boring without some effects. The bottom row of this toolbar has a variety of tools for customizing text. These are the same as a word processor. From left to right, they are the style, the font, size, bold, italics, underline, three justification buttons, numbered lists, bullets, two indent buttons, a highlight colour, and text colour.
If you right click on the white space, you can customize your page a little further. A screen like this should open up:

Most of this junk will be useless to you right now. You will probably want to change the title, which is what is displayed at the top of the window. Also, under the background tab, you can change the colours of various things on the page. For instance, you can change the font colour here so that the default colour on the page will be red instead of black.
After you've made something nice with purdy colours, you can go ahead and save your page. Under the file menu, click save. You may want to make a new folder for your website, as it may end up consisting of a whole bunch of files and you wouldn't want to get any all mixed up. If you want this page to be the first one seen when your site is loaded, give it the name index.htm. Otherwise, name it something dumb like junk.html.
Next you'll want to learn about interconnecting your pages with hypertext links just like this.
